UCLA gymnast Kiralee Hayashi (Kailua, HI) and football player Shawn Stuart (Saugus, CA) were named today as 1998-99 Pacific-10 Conference Medal winners. A Conference Medal is awarded annually to each member institution's outstanding male and female student-athlete based on the exhibition of the greatest combination of performance and achievement in scholarship, athletics and leadership.
Hayashi, co-captain of UCLA's 1999 Pac-10 Gymnastics Championship team, won the NCAA balance beam title this season and ended her career as a nine-time All-American. She earned Pac-10 Gymnast of the Year honors in 1999 and was a two-time Pac-10 All-Academic selection. Hayashi was a finalist for the AAI American Award, given annually to the nation's most outstanding all-around senior gymnast.
Stuart, a center on UCLA's 1999 Rose Bowl team, is a two-time GTE/CoSIDA Academic All-American and a recipient of an NCAA Post-Graduate Scholarship. The second-team All-Pac-10 selection did not allow a sack in 1998 and finished his career with 35 consecutive starts. He played his senior season as a graduate student and as an undergraduate made the Director's Honor Roll (3.0+ GPA) in each of his 14 quarters.
