Bruins Off to Hot Start at ITA Masters

MALIBU, Calif. โ Day one of the 2016 Oracle ITA Masters has concluded in Malibu and the Bruins are off to a hot start.ย Freshman Ena Shibahara, junior Martin Redlicki, and senior Gage Brymer each advanced to their respective second rounds of singles play, while also posting doubles wins on Thursday.ย ย
Kicking things off with mixed doubles action, the Bruins notched two first-round wins.ย First up, Shibahara paired with Redlicki to dispatch Marine Cartier and Alex Chepik, 6-1, to advance to the round of 16.ย Brymer followed suit with partner Sara Daavettila, downing Shreya Pasricha and Jacob Whalley, 6-4.ย ย ย
In women's singles, freshman standout Shibahara advanced to the round of 16 after defeating Cartier in straight sets.ย Second-seeded Shibahara dictated the pace of the match, registering a quick 6-1 win in the first set.ย Carrying this momentum into the second set, the Bruin blanked her Alabama State opponent to advance to the next round.ย
Shibahara faces Gabriela Porubin (Wichita State) in the round of 16 on Friday at the Malibu Racquet Club. The match will begin no earlier than 11 a.m. ย ย ย
On the men's side, eighth-seeded Redlicki and Jaime Barajas (Utah State) went down to the wire in the first set.ย Redlicki edged Barajas in the tiebreaker to take the set, 7-6(3).ย The Bruin then made quick work of his opponent in the second set, coasting to a 6-2 victory.ย On the other side of the draw, seventh-seeded Gage Brymer also posted a straight-set win.ย Brymer downed Portland State's Nathan Boneil, 6-2, 6-4.ย
On Friday, Redlicki squares off with David Biosca (East Tennessee State) and Brymer faces Or Ram-Harel (Tulsa). ย Both matches begin at 12:30 p.m. at Pepperdine. ย ย ย
Thursday's action concluded with more mixed doubles.ย Shibahara and Redlicki defeated Kana Daniel and Shawn Hadavi, 6-3, while Brymer and Daavettila edged Julia O'Loughlin and Diogo Rocha, 6-4.ย Both pairs will play in Friday's quarterfinals.ย ย ย ย
