Bruins Advance at #ITARegionals

MALIBU, Calif. – The Bruins continue their hot streak at the 2016 ITA Southwest Regional Championships in Malibu, as five players have advanced to the main draw round of 16. In doubles play, two Bruin pairs have reached the quarterfinals.
Top-seeded Martin Redlicki and No. 2 seed Gage Brymer both registered straight-set wins to kick off singles play. At the top of the bracket, Redlicki downed Grand Canyon's Mathieu Rajaonah, 6-2, 6-4, in the round of 32. On the other side of the draw, Brymer dispatched LMU's Lukas Moenter, 6-3, 6-2. Daniel Gealer and No. 10 Austin Rapp also advanced in straights. Rapp defeated Humberto Lopez (UC Irvine), 7-5, 6-2, while Gealer took down UCSB's Teague Hamilton, 6-4, 6-4.
After dropping the first set to USD's Alex Araouzos, ninth-seeded Joseph Di Giulio rattled off back-to-back wins to punch his ticket to the round of 16.
Sophomore Maxime Cressy and freshman Ben Goldberg both fell in the round of 32. After taking the first set over third-seeded Logan Smith, 7-5, Goldberg was unable to keep pace with his Trojan opponent in the remaining two. Logan advanced with a three-set win over the Bruin newcomer.
In the singles consolation draw, sophomore Reid Shumway cruised past Ruben Blattner (Hawai'i) in straights, while senior Michael Guzman edged Anil Patel (UC Irvine) in a third set super tiebreaker.
In doubles action, third-seeded Cressy and Redlicki coasted through the rounds of 32 and 16 on Friday. They first downed GCU's Rajaonah and Lorenzo Fucile, 8-2, followed by Arizona's Shoki Kasahara and Shota Meparidze, 8-1. Also advancing, the fifth-seeded pair of Di Giulio and Rapp outlasted UCSB's Hamilton and Cody Rakela in a tiebreaker before moving on to dispatch Pepperdine's Tom Hill and Jack Van Slyke, 8-2, in the round of 16.
Rounding out Friday's doubles action, Goldberg and Guzman fell in the round of 32 to UCSB's Chase Masciorini and Joseph Rotheram, 8-5.
The ITA Regional Championships feature some of the top men's and women's players across the country. Over 8,000 student-athletes from NCAA Division I, II, III, NAIA, Junior and Community Colleges compete across 85 ITA Regional Championships around the country.
The Southwest Regional Championships continue tomorrow with main draw singles and doubles, as well as consolation singles action. Results and updated draws can be found on the event page.
