Bruins In the Hunt at #ITARegionals

MALIBU, Calif. – UCLA junior Martin Redlicki and senior Gage Brymer punched their tickets to the semifinals of the 2016 ITA Southwest Regional Championships on Saturday afternoon. In doubles play, Joseph Di Giulio and Austin Rapp also advanced to the semifinals with a commanding win over the tournament's fourth-seeded pair.

Two Bruins are still in the hunt for the singles title. After top-seeded Redlicki edged Cal Poly's Corey Pang 7-5 in the first set, Pang rallied in the second to force a third. Redlicki quickly regained control of the match, blanking Pang 6-0 to register the round of 16 win. In his second match of the day, Redlicki coasted past Joel Gamerov of USD in straight sets.

On the bottom half of the draw, No. 2 seed Brymer dispatched Morgan Mays of UCSB in straights to advance to the quarterfinals. There, he made quick work of SDSU's Sander Gjoels-Andersen. With a 6-1, 6-2 victory, Brymer secured his spot in the semis.

Both of Sunday's semifinal matchups feature crosstown showdowns, as Redlicki faces Thibault Forget (USC) and Brymer squares off with Logan Smith (USC). The matches begin at 11:15 a.m. PT.

Three Bruins suffered round of 16 losses on Saturday. Ninth-seeded Di Giulio fell to No. 3 seed Guilherme Ristow Hadlich (Pepperdine), 6-1, 6-3, while fourth-seeded Forget (USC) defeated No. 10 seed Austin Rapp, 6-4, 6-0. Rounding out singles play, sophomore Daniel Gealer fell to Sander Gjoels-Andersen (SDSU), 6-4, 6-4.

In doubles action, fifth-seeded Di Giulio and Rapp punched their ticket to the semis with an 8-2 win over Filip Vittek and Joshua Page (USD). USCB's Mays and Simon Freund upset the third-seeded duo of Redlicki and Maxime Cressy, 8-6, in the quarterfinals.

The Southwest Regional Championships continue tomorrow with main draw singles and doubles, as well as consolation singles action. Results and updated draws can be found on the event page.
