Brymer Wins #ITARegionals Singles Final

October 24, 2016 | Men's Tennis

MALIBU, Calif. โ€“ For the third straight year, a Bruin is the ITA Southwest Regional singles champion.ย  Following in the footsteps of junior Martin Redlicki and former Bruin Mackenzie McDonald, senior Gage Brymer claimed this year's title with a straight-set win over USC's Thibault Forget on Monday afternoon.
"I feel like I played pretty solid throughout the tournament, and not much changed in the final," said Brymer of his performance.ย  "I was on a roll in the first, and he stepped it up a bit in the second.ย  He was missing a little less and kept it tight all the way through.ย  I just played a couple of big points pretty tough and was able to pull it out in the end."

Second-seeded Brymer dictated the pace from the get-go, taking an early 5-1 lead in the first set.ย  Serving for the set, Brymer won a deuce point with a forehand winner to register the 6-1 win.

The crosstown foes traded hold for hold to start the second set.ย  At 3-3, Brymer broke Forget at love to take his first lead of the set.ย  The next three games were decided at deuce, with Forget pulling ahead 6-5.ย  Brymer then saved three set points to hold and knot the score at 6-6.ย

The Bruin sealed the deal in the tiebreaker, capturing the title with a 6-1, 7-6(3) victory over his Trojan foe.ย  With the win, Brymer is awarded direct acceptance into the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships next month.

"I'm really excited," said Brymer of his automatic bid.ย  "I've never been to that tournament before.ย  I've always heard good things, but I'm really excited to be able to experience it this year for myself.ย  I can't wait."ย

Last season Redlicki defeated USC's Logan Smith, 3-6, 6-2, 6-4, in the singles final.ย  In 2014, McDonaldย won the singles and doubles titles.ย  In the singles championship, McDonald lost the first set to USC's Jonny Wang, but battled back to take the match in three sets.ย  In doubles play, McDonald partnered with then-freshman Redlicki to claim the doubles crown.ย

"I think it's great," said Brymer of UCLA prevailing over USC in the final the past three years.ย  "It says a lot about our team and our program, and it's always great to beat SC in anything.ย  Hopefully next year, we'll get another Bruin to take the title."

Next up, UCLA heads across town for the Southern California Intercollegiate Championships, Oct. 27-31, at USC's Marks Stadium.ย  Following that event, the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships take place Nov. 3-6 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y.ย
