Bruins Fall to Cougars in Pac-12 Tilt

PULLMAN, Wash. – The No. 15 UCLA women's swim team fell to Washington State, 143-119, on Saturday afternoon. The Bruins won three individual events and posted the top time in the 400 Free Relay.

200 Medley Relay
Two Bruin relay squads kicked off meet action on Saturday afternoon. The A team—Emma Schanz, Amy Okada, Isabella Goldsmith, and Caroline McTaggart—posted a 1:45.49 to finish second behind WSU. Finishing fourth, Madison Varisco, Brigitte Winkler, Maddy Burnham, and Savannah Steffen swam a 1:47.07.

1000 Freestyle
Redshirt senior Katy Campbell won her second straight 1000 Freestyle event. After besting the competition by 11 seconds at UCLA's Pink Meet last week, Campbell swam a season best 10:11.89 to edge teammate Sandra Soe by less than two seconds. Soe placed second with a time of 10:13.23 and Hayden Walker finished fifth at 10:39.44.

200 Freestyle
Kenisha Liu led the Bruins in the 200 Free. The freshman posted a 1:52.54 to finish .25 seconds behind WSU's Ryan Falk, who swam the top time of 1:52.29. Carly Reid and Lisa Kaunitz placed fourth and fifth, respectively, with times of 1:52.89 and 1:53.40.

100 Backstroke
The Bruins went 3, 4, 5 in the 100 Back on Saturday. Varisco swam a 57.70 to place third, just .07 seconds ahead of Natalie Amberg in fourth. Sabrina Kwok finished fifth with a 58.36.

100 Breast
Schanz and Goldsmith placed second and third in the 100 Breast, respectively. Schanz posted a 1:04.59 to finish .28 seconds behind WSU's Angela Mavrantza. Goldsmith swam a 1:05.78, while Winkler finished fifth at 1:06.56.

200 Butterfly
Three Bruins hit the pool for the 200 Fly on Saturday. Okada swam the second-best time (2:03.77), while Liu and Marie-Pierre Delisle finished fourth and fifth, respectively. Liu posted a 2:04.54 and Delisle clocked in at 2:05.04.

50 Freestyle
McTaggart, Steffen, and Burnham represented the Bruins in the splash and dash. WSU's Hannah Bruggman finished first with a 23.88, just ahead of teammate Haley Rose Love (23.91). McTaggart checked in at third with a 23.99, while Steffen and Burnham placed sixth and seventh, respectively.

100 Freestyle
Nabbing UCLA's second top time of the meet, Liu swam a 51.59 to finish first in the 100 Free. McTaggart placed third with a 51.91, while Steffen finished fifth at 53.04.

200 Backstroke
The Bruins finished second, third, and fifth in the 200 Back. The Cougars' Jasmine Margetts swam the top time of 2:01.77. Amberg checked in at second (2:04.48) just ahead of Delisle (2:04.67), while Varisco posted a 2:06.99 to finish fifth.

200 Breaststroke
Schanz nabbed the Bruins' third win of the day. The sophomore swam a 2:16.29 to finish first in the 200 Breast. Kaunitz and Winkler finished third and fourth, respectively, with times of 2:23.10 and 2:23.59.

500 Freestyle
Campbell, Michaela Merlihan, and Soe hit the pool for the 500 Free. WSU's Falk posted the top time of 4:58.36, edging Campbell by .10 seconds. Merlihan finished third at 5:01.39, while Soe placed fourth with a 5:03.72.

100 Butterfly
Okada and Goldsmith went 2, 3 in the 100 Fly. Anna Brolin won the event for the Cougars, while Okada and Goldsmith posted times of 55.77 and 56.60, respectively. Rounding out the Bruins competing in the event, Burnham finished sixth at 59.63.

400 Individual Medley
In the last individual event of the meet, Schanz swam the second-best time (4:24.33) to finish .17 seconds behind WSU's Margetts in first. With a 4:29.11, Kaunitz finished third. Closing out the competition, Campbell place sixth (4:39.64).

400 Freestyle Relay
Wrapping up the meet with a win, the Bruin quartet of McTaggart, Goldsmith, Steffen, and Liu swam the top time in the 400 Free Relay (3:26.31). UCLA's B squad—Amberg, Reid, Nina Hayes, and Okada—clocked in at 3:33.67 to finish fourth.

The Bruins return to the pool next weekend to host the Arizona schools. UCLA faces No. 22 Arizona on Friday, Nov. 4, before squaring off with Arizona State on Saturday, Nov. 5.
