October 07, 2016 | Women's Tennis
LOS ANGELES - Bruin freshman women's tennis player Ena Shibahara booked a spot in the semifinals of one of the nation's biggest tournaments on Friday, as she posted a pair of singles wins at the Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships, which is being held just up the street from UCLA at the Riviera Country Club.
Shibahara, who has now won nine-straight matches in the tournament starting with pre-qualifying, began her day with a 2-6, 6-2, 6-3 win over Oklahoma State's Vladica Babic in the round of 16. Babic was actually the first player to take a set from Shibahara in the tournament.
Things didn't look good for Shibahara in the quarterfinals as her opponent, Kourtney Keegan of Florida, took the opening set 6-0. Shibahara regrouped on the changeover and took control from there, losing just two games in the final two sets. She would win the second set 6-0 and drop a pair of games in the third to win 0-6, 6-0, 6-2 and move into the semifinals.
Awaiting Shibahara in the semifinals is Vanderbilt's Astra Sharma.
