Van Winden Named Pac-12 FOW for Second Time

SAN FRANCISCO - Torrey Van Winden has been named Pac-12 Freshman of the Week for the second time this season, as announced by the conference on Monday. It is the third weekly league honor for Van Winden, who was also named FOW on Oct. 24, as well as Offensive Player of the Week on Oct. 17.
Van Winden helped the Bruins win at Stanford on Saturday to post UCLA's first season sweep of the Cardinal since 2011. The freshman tied a career high with 19 kills on a .381 hitting percentage, adding eight digs, four blocks and two service aces. Last Thursday at California, Van Windenย was one kill and one dig shy of a double-double, notching nine kills and nine digs to go with a .389 percentage and three blocks.
Van Winden is third on the team with 3.04 kills and 3.50 points per set, adding a .290 hitting percentage, 1.68 digs per set, 0.67 blocks per set and six service aces. Her numbers have been even better in Pac-12 play, with a team-best 3.19 kps and 3.67 pps to go with a .302 percentage and 1.87 dps. On the season, Van Winden has 12 double-figure kills matches, five double-figure digs contests and three double-doubles.
The Bruins have won six Pac-12 weekly honors this season, with Van Winden providing half of those. Senior Taylor Formico has earned a pair of Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week honors (Oct. 17 and 31), while senior Jennie Frager was the conference's Offensive POW on Aug. 29. Since 2011, when the conference started handing out Offensive, Defensive and Freshman of the Week honors, UCLA has won 11 Offensive, seven Defensive and six Freshman awards (24 total). The Bruins have 85 all-time Pac-12 weekly awards.
The Bruins, who gained four spots and are ninth in this week's AVCA Top 25 Coaches Poll, host Oregon State on Wednesday at 8 p.m. The match will air live on Pac-12 Los Angeles and will feature free live audio on UCLABruins.com.
