Bruins Still on Top at A3 Invite

MONTEREY PARK, Calif. โ€“ Heading into the final day of competition at the A3 Performance Invitational, the Bruins have secured a comfortable lead over the 10-team field. ย UCLA has tallied a two-day total of 909.5 points, 130 points ahead of second-place SDSU. ย ย  ย  ย 

200 Medley Relay
The Bruin A squad of Linnea Mack, Sarah Kaunitz, Katie Grover, and Madison White edged SDSU's A team by .05 seconds to record the top time in the 200 Medley Relay (1:40.32).ย  ย ย 

400 Individual Medley
Two Bruins competed in the evening session of the 400 IM on Friday.ย  In the championship final, freshman Isabella Goldsmith checked in at third with a time of 4:19.86.ย  Finishing first in the consolation final, freshman Kenisha Liu swam a 4:18.97 to top the field by nearly seven seconds.ย 

100 Butterfly
Four Bruins swam in the scoring finals of the 100 Fly.ย  Freshman Amy Okada recorded a top-five finish in the A final, placing fifth with a 53.98, while junior Marie-Pierre Delisle posted the top time (55.29) in the B final.ย  Senior Savannah Steffen and junior Maddy Burnham placed second and eighth, respectively, in the bonus final.

200 Freestyle
Redshirt senior Katy Campbell, freshman Cali Raukar, and junior Carly Reid competed in the championship final of the 200 Free on Friday evening.ย  Campbell swam the second-best time (1:48.26) behind Hawaii's Franzi Weidner.ย  Raukar and Reid finished sixth and seventh, respectively.ย  In the consolation final, sophomore Sandra Soe and senior Michaela Merlihan went 1-2.ย  Soe posted a 1:49.69 to finish ahead of Merlihan at 1:50.12.ย  Rounding out the Bruins competing in the scoring finals, junior Margaux Verger Gourson placed fourth in the bonus final with a time of 1:52.63.ย  ย ย 

100 Breaststroke
A trio of Bruins competed in the evening session of the 100 Breast.ย  Sarah Kaunitz led the pack, placing sixth in the A final with a time of 1:03.57.ย  In the B final, Brigitte Winkler finished fourth (12th overall) at 1:04.35.ย  Sophomore Elena Escalas recorded the second-fastest time in the bonus final (1:05.01).ย 

100 Backstroke
Mack nabbed the Bruins' first individual win of the meet when she swam the top time in the 100 Back (52.25).ย  Emma Schanz also recorded a top-five finish in the A final.ย  The sophomore finished fourth with a time of 55.58.ย  Three Bruins competed in the consolation final on Friday evening.ย  Delisle placed third, while senior Nina Hayes and junior Madison Varisco placed sixth and seventh, respectively.ย  Sophomore Sabrina Kwok closed out competition for the Bruins in the 100 Back with a fifth-place finish in the bonus final (57.49).ย 

800 Freestyle Relay
Wrapping up Friday's evening session, the Bruin quartet of Lisa Kaunitz, White, Hayden Walker, and Leeza Shashkova recorded the fourth-best time in the 800 Free Relay (7:31.82).ย  ย ย 

The A3 Performance Invitational concludes Saturday with the 200 Back, 1650 Free, 100 Free, 200 Breast, 200 Fly, and 400 Free Relay.ย  Preliminaries begin at 9 a.m., while finals kick off at 5 p.m. ย Live results will be available through the Meet Mobile app, available on iTunes, while results will be postedย here.
