UCLA to Honor the Military This Saturday at the Rose Bowl

November 07, 2016 | Football

LOS ANGELES - This Saturday's game against Oregon State (11/12 - 6:00 p.m.) marks the 20th consecutive year UCLA will hold Military Appreciation Day at the Rose Bowl.  All active members of the U.S. Armed Forces can receive one free bench ticket to the game by showing military ID to the Rose Bowl ticket office on game day.

Service members can also purchase up to eight additional tickets in the bench seating area at $25 (normally $49) per ticket. Additionally, all military veterans can purchase up to eight tickets in the bench seating area for $25 per ticket.  More information on Military Appreciation Day tickets can be found at HERE (all ticket offers on game day are subject to availability).

Once again, the UCLA Football team will wear special 'Salute to Service' uniforms this year in honor of Military Appreciation Day.  This year's alternate uniform incorporates a military-style stenciled UCLA wordmark, a stars and stripes base layer under the uniform and an American flag inspired stars and stripes logo helmet – all in navy blue and gold.  'Salute to Service' hats, t-shirts and replica jerseys are on sale now in the campus bookstore or online at www.bruinteamshop.com.

As was the case last year, UCLA Athletics will auction off a limited number of game-issued stars and stripes logo helmets.  The helmets will be posted to www.uclabruins.com/auctions on Monday, Nov. 14 and will be auctioned off in two-week increments.  All proceeds raised through these auctions will directly support The Volunteers of America's Blue Butterfly Village (www.voa.org/housing_properties/blue-butterfly-village), a local organization that offers subsidized housing for veterans and their children.

Last Fall, the auction of five American flag inspired stars and stripes logo helmets issued for the Bruins' victory at Oregon State raised $10,368 for the 'Homes for Heroes' project – an initiative put forth by the Mayor's Fund for Los Angeles to cover move-in costs of 5000 homeless veterans in the Los Angeles area with Federal housing vouchers.  Committed to the cause of eliminating veteran homelessness in Los Angeles, UCLA Athletics is hoping to surpass last year's number and thanks its fans for their generosity in contributing to this more than worthy cause.

Prior to kick-off on Saturday, in honor of UCLA Football's long-standing relationship with the U.S. Navy Seals, Navy SEAL Leapfrogs will be parachuting into the Rose Bowl.  Additionally, Calipatira High School JROTC will present the Colors during the playing of the National Anthem.

At the half, the UCLA Band will perform a military-themed halftime show that will conclude with the unfurling of a giant 100-yard American flag, carried by approximately 250 members of UCLA ROTC and JROTC from surrounding area high schools, across the field.

Throughout the evening, the game will be filled with military honorees and acknowledgements.  Two U.S. Service Members currently serving in Kuwait, both UCLA alums, will have messages for the crowd played on the Rose Bowl big screen while UCLA will also honor alumni in attendance celebrating their 50th anniversary of serving in the Vietnam War and the Student Veteran of the Year.

Last but certainly not least, in conjunction with L.A. County Military & Veteran Affairs, UCLA will honor Veteran of the Year recipient Lieutenant Colonel Robert W. Johnson, U.S. Air Force (Ret).  Lt. Colonel Johnson served 26 years in the U.S. Air Force and since his retirement in 1991, has been devoted to serving the veteran community.  To date, he has organized more than 75 Legion of Honor presentation ceremonies that have honored 60 World War I and more than 300 World War II veterans for their bravery in helping to liberate our allied nations during combat operations.  In 2016, the French government recognized Lt. Colonel Johnson with the National Order of Merit and the National Order of the Legion of Honor for 20 years of meritorious service.
