UCLA Falls to No. 4 Ohio State

COLUMBUS, Ohio โ The No. 27 UCLA women's tennis team saw its season come to an end on Saturday when it fell to fourth-seeded Ohio State in the NCAA round of 32.ย With the 4-1 loss, the Bruins close out the 2015-16 season with a 15-7 record.ย ย ย

UCLA got on the board first, rallying to clinch the doubles point on courts 1 and 2 after Maia Magill and Kristin Wiley fell, 6-2, at the bottom of the lineup.ย The seventh-ranked duo of Catherine Harrison and Kyle McPhillips coasted past ninth-ranked Anna Sanford and Miho Kowase, 6-2, on court 1.ย The clincher came from Terri Fleming and Alaina Miller in a tiebreaker on court 2.ย The Bruin paired edged No. 58 Gabriella De Santis and Sandy Niehaus, 7-6(8), to give UCLA a 1-0 advantage heading into singles.
Unfortunately for the Bruins, the Buckeyes registered four straight singles wins to clinch the match.ย First up, No. 81 Niehaus dispatched Magill at the bottom of the lineup to even the score at 1-1.ย Then Kowase defeated Miller, 6-3, 6-1, on court 4 to give Ohio State its first lead of the game.ย No. 89 Sanford then edged McPhillips, 6-3, 6-4, on court 2 to inch the Buckeyes closer to victory.ย
The clincher came at the top of the lineup as third-ranked Francesca Di Lorenzo downed No. 17 Harrison, 7-5, 6-3.
Although the Bruins are not advancing to Tulsa, Harrison and McPhillips will compete in the NCAA Championships.ย Harrison received an at-large bid into the Division 1 singles championship to take place following the NCAAteam championship. ย In doubles, Harrison and McPhillips are an at-large selection for the Division I doubles championships.
