COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -ย UCLA alum Karsta Lowe will represent the United States at next month's Rio Olympic Games, as USA Volleyball announced its 12-player roster on Tuesday. The team will be guided by another UCLA grad, head coach Karch Kiraly.
Lowe is one of eight players making their first appearance on the U.S. Olympic Team and is the youngest member of the squad.ย "Though Karsta has only been with USA for two seasons, she's made a big impact for USA, especially as an offensive force at the net," Kiraly said. "She's been working hard to develop the best all-around game possible, all to make our team the strongest it can be in Rio."
Lowe was selected as the Most Valuable Player of the 2015 FIVB World Grand Prix, the most prestigious annual women's international volleyball tournament, during her rookie international season with Team USA. She helped the U.S. win gold at that tournament, as well as at the 2015 NORCECA Continental Championship and the 2016 NORCECA Olympic Qualification Tournament. Team USA won bronze at the 2015 FIVB World Cup and silver at this month's FIVB World Grand Prix. Lowe was a two-time AVCA All-America, AVCA First Team All-Region and All-Pac-12 First Team selection at UCLA. She ranks fifth in UCLA history in kills per set (3.98) and 13th in kills (1,422).
The U.S. Women's National Team is ranked No. 1 in the world by the FIVB, but will be looking for its first Olympic Games gold medal. Team USA has earned three Olympic silver medals (1984, 2008 and 2012). The Olympic Games schedule for the United States, which is in Pool B, starts on Saturday, Aug. 6 against Puerto Rico at 4:05 p.m. Rio Time (12:05 p.m. Pacific). Pool play continues on Monday, Aug. 8 against the Netherlands (2 p.m. Rio/10 a.m. Pacific), Wednesday, Aug. 10 versus Serbia (2 p.m. Rio/10 a.m. Pacific), Friday, Aug. 12 against Italy (2 p.m. Rio/10 a.m. Pacific) and concludes Sunday, Aug. 14 versus China (4:05 p.m. Rio/12:05 p.m. Pacific).
The top four teams in the two Olympic Games pools advance to the quarterfinals, which starts on Tuesday, Aug. 16. The semifinals will take place on Thursday, Aug. 18, with the tournament concluding on Saturday, Aug. 20 with the gold- and bronze-medal matches.
Lowe is the sixth UCLA women's volleyball alum to represent the United States in the Olympics, joining Elisabeth Bachman (2004), Elaine Youngs (1996), Liz Masakayan (1988), Jeanne Beauprey Reeves (1984 - silver medalist) and Laurie Lewis (1968). Lowe will also be the second UCLA women's volleyball alum to play in the upcoming Rio Games, joining Lauren Fendrick, who will take part in the women's beach competition.
