Women's Volleyball
The United Statesย women's volleyball team remained undefeated at the Rio Olympics, defeating Japan in straight sets in Tuesday's quarterfinal action. Next up for Team USA, which is led by head coach and UCLA great Karch Kiraly, is a semifinal contest against Serbia on Thursday at 9 a.m.ย PT. 2011 UCLA National Champion Karsta Lowe appeared in all three sets, recording a kill in each of the first two stanzas to go with a kill and an ace in the third set.
Women's Soccer
Brazil and Canada both fell in the semifinal round and will face each other in the bronze medal match on Friday. Sweden, which beat the United States in penalty kicks in the quarterfinals, did it again to the host nation, defeating Brazil in penalties, 4-3, after a 0-0 draw. UCLA goalkeeper coach Aline Reis did not play. Canada lost to Germany in the second semifinal, 2-0. UCLA freshman Jessie Fleming started and played the full 90, recording one shot on goal.
Track & Field
In the women's pole vault qualifying round Tori Pena finished 27th in the first action in the track stadium for the Bruins. The 2010 All-American at UCLA, competing for Ireland, cleared 14-1.25 (4.30m) Tuesday morning. In the javelin, Brittany Borman also finished 27th in the qualifying with a mark of 183-10 (56.04m).
Women's Basketball
Bruin alumna Nirra Fields and ninth-ranked Canada fell to fourth-ranked France in the last quarterfinal of the day, 68-63. The Canadians have been eliminated from the tournament. Fields came off the bench to play 9:38 for the Canadians, possessing the best plus/minus tally for her team at 6. She scored three points and registered two assists, one rebound, one block and one steal against France.
