RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil - Two-time All-American and 2011 National Champion Karsta Lowe helped Team USA win the bronze medal on Saturday, as the United States defeated the Netherlands in four sets. Team USA, which was led by head coach and UCLA great Karch Kiraly, won seven of its eight matches, including going 5-0 in pool play.
Lowe played in all eight contests, recording 38 kills, two aces and one block in 23 sets. Her best match in pool play came on Aug. 12 against Italy when she had 12 kills in the United States' 3-1 victory. Ten of her dozen kills came in the last set and a quarter. Lowe also recorded four kills versus Serbia (Aug. 10) and a pair in the opener against Puerto Rico (Aug. 6).
To begin the knockout round, the U.S. swept Japan (Aug. 16), as Lowe had three kills and an ace. Her best match came in the semifinals, albeit in a loss, against Serbia. Lowe notched a team-best 13 kills, including eight in the final two sets, but the U.S. dropped the five-set decision to fall into the bronze medal match. Lowe posted four kills and an ace in the matchup with the Netherlands, as the United States earned the bronze.
