CAIRNS, Australia โ€“ The UCLA women's basketball team, coaching staffย and travel party traveled to Djarragun Collegeย in Gordonvale, Queensland, Australia on Wednesday, August 24 to spend a day with the students at this creative and innovative school.

Djarragun College believes that an excellent education is the foundation for a great life. The school is made up of islander or aboriginal students in an age range from 5-16. While many of their students embrace the opportunities of further education, many find their path through training and employment. Djarragun also has a trade program that is designed with the future workplace in mind where students can learn at school and on the job with one of their many employment partners. One of the unique features about Djarragun College is how they connect with culture. The best of both worlds is a deeply held philosophy at Djarragun. They really take care to integrate a deep cultural connection into their academic program.

The Bruins began the day learning about Australia and then were treated to aย culturalย exchange as they were given a unique opportunity to learnย an indigenous sitting dance.

After the dance, some of the Bruins stayed in the classroom to speak to a group of senior students as they prepared to make decisions about their futures and to answer any questions that might have.

Meanwhile the rest of the UCLA Bruins proceeded to the Djarragun Sports Academy to conduct a basketball clinic, complete with fun and games, some drills and some individual skills assessment and clinic by both UCLA coaches and student-athletes.

The day at Djarragun College concluded with an 8-clap and then a lunch at Kuranda, a village in the rainforest.
