UCLA Football Falls to No. 7/6 Stanford, 22-13

September 24, 2016 | Football

PASADENA, Calif. โ€“ UCLA dropped a 22-13 decision to No. 7/6 Stanford in a primetime Pac-12 matchup before 70,822 at the Rose Bowl on Saturday evening.
ย
Trailing 13-9 late in the fourth quarter, Stanford (3-0, 2-0 Pac-12) claimed a 16-13 lead on its final offensive drive. Quarterback Ryan Burns threw an eight-yard touchdown pass to JJ Arcega-Whiteside with 24 seconds to play in regulation. Burns' first touchdown pass of the night capped a 10-play, 70-yard drive in less than two minutes.
ย
UCLA (2-2, 0-1 Pac-12) regained possession with 20 seconds to play from its own 24-yard line. After a 24-yard completion to the Bruins' 47-yard line, UCLA had one last chance for a potential game-winning play. With four seconds left, Stanford's Joey Alfieri stripped UCLA quarterback Josh Rosen. Stanford defensive lineman Solomon Thomas recovered the loose ball, running 58 yards and into the Cardinal's end zone for a touchdown.
ย
"Every loss stings," UCLA head coach Jim Mora said. "And it doesn't matter who you lose to, it stings. It stings when you lose like that. We played so courageously on defense and did such a great job against a really good team."
ย
Stanford, which extended its winning streak against UCLA to nine games, netted 67 of its total 143 passing yards during its final offensive drive. Burns finished the game having completed 13 of 25 passes for 137 yards and one touchdown.
ย
UCLA's Rosen completed 18 of 27 passes for 248 yards and one touchdown, distributing the ball to nine different receivers.
ย
Stanford running back Christian McCaffrey netted 138 rushing yards on 26 total carries, finishing the game with 165 all-purpose yards.
ย
Trailing 3-0, UCLA claimed a 7-3 cushion on Rosen's 10-yard touchdown pass to Nate Iese with 18 seconds to play in the first quarter. The Bruins pushed their margin to 10-3 on a 27-yard field goal by JJ Molson with 2:01 left before halftime.
ย
Stanford closed the gap to 10-6 with 3:01 to play in the third quarter, as Conrad Ukropina nailed his second field goal of the game, a 37-yard attempt. Ukropina's 44-yard field goal with 10:55 remaining in the fourth quarter cut UCLA's margin to 10-9.
ย
The Bruins pushed their advantage to 13-9 on Molson's 35-yard field goal at the 6:32 mark in the final quarter.

Stanford regained possession after Molson's field goal and but was unable to record a first down, punting the ball on a 4th-and-1 situation from the Stanford 39-yard line with 4:40 remaining. UCLA followed with a six-play drive that ended with a punt to Stanford's 15-yard line, but the Cardinal opened its drive on the 30-yard line after UCLA was penalized for kick-catch interference. That marked the start of Stanford's game-winning 10-play, 70-yard drive.
ย
UCLA returns to action against Arizona on Saturday, Oct. 1 at the Rose Bowl (game time is to be determined).
