UCLA's 31-game regular season schedule will open with the 2017 Pac-12 China Game. The Bruins will face Cal State L.A. in a home exhibition game on Wednesday, Nov. 1, before departing for Shanghai on Saturday, Nov. 4.
ย
This marks the third year that the Pac-12 will open its men's basketball season in China. The Pac-12 became the first United States sports league โ€“ collegiate or professional โ€“ to host a regular-season contest in China in 2015 when Washington defeated Texas. Last season, Stanford took down Harvard in Shanghai.
ย
In addition, this will mark UCLA's second trip to China in the last six years. The Bruins traveled to Beijing and Shanghai during a six-day trip in Aug. 2012 as part of an offseason foreign tour. That UCLA team played three exhibition games โ€“ two contests against Chinese university teams and one game against the Shanghai Sharks of the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA).
ย
The UCLA men's basketball team last played a regular-season contest outside of North America during the 1980-81 season. That year, UCLA defeated Temple, 73-49, in Tokyo, Japan, on Dec. 21, 1980. The game was played at Yoyogi Gymnasium in Tokyo.
ย
This year's Pac-12 China Game will help usher in the start of the 2017-18 U.S. college basketball season. The game will tip at 12:30 p.m. local Shanghai time on Saturday, Nov. 11 and be televised live on ESPN in the United States and streamed live on Youku Sports. Tickets are available throughย en.Damai.cnย in the United States andย Damai.cnย in China.
ย
Longtime Pac-12 partner Federation of University Sports of China (FUSC), which operates under China's Ministry of Education, will co-host the game, and AEG Asia will again operate the event.
ย
For the first time, this year's Pac-12 China Game will feature two men's basketball teams coming off postseason appearances as UCLA advanced to the Sweet 16 of the 2017 NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament and Georgia Tech reached the championship game of the National Invitation Tournament (NIT).
ย
More than 7,000 fans have attended each of the previous Pac-12 China Games. The 2017 Pac-12 China Game will be played at Baoshan Sports Center, currently home to the Shanghai Baoshan Dahua Sharks of the Women's Chinese Basketball Association as well as site of a number of CBA contests and last year's Tencent Celebrity Basketball Game featuring Marbury and Tracy McGrady.
