PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. - The third-ranked Bruins overcame a seven-shot deficit on Wednesday at Poppy Hills Golf Club to defend their Stanford Intercollegiate title, defeating the host Cardinal by three strokes, while freshman Patty Tavatanakit shared medalist honors for her first collegiate victory.
Following a delayed start due to fog and a quick change to a shotgun start, the Bruins were the only team to shoot under par in the final round, recording a 9-under 275, 10 strokes better than Stanford. UCLA finished at 3-under (849) for the tournament, picking up the program's 10th victory over the last three seasons and the 63rd of head coach Carrie Forsyth's career. It was also the fifth Stanford Intercollegiate title for the Bruins and second in a row (1995, 2008, 2011, 2016).
Tavatanakit, who was four shots back heading into Wednesday's final round, now has first- and second-place showings (ANNIKA Intercollegiate) to open her collegiate career. She shot a 4-under 67 to finish at 6-under 207 for the tournament, tying for first with Stanford's Andrea Lee. Tavatanakit made three birdies on her front nine (#1, #4, #6) to take the lead, adding another birdie on #10. She notched two more birdies on #12 and #16 to go with a pair of bogeys.
Tavatanakit's victory gave the Bruins five straight medalist honors at the Stanford Intercollegiate (Alison Lee 2013, Bronte Law 2014-2016).
Juniors Lilia Vu and Beth Wu each tied for sixth (E, 213), with both shooting 1-under 70s on Wednesday. Vu made a pair of birdies on the third and 15th, as well as just one bogey, while Wu made four birdies on #1, #9, #11 and #15 to go with three bogeys. Sophomore Mariel Galdiano shot the second-lowest round of the day for the Bruins with a 3-under 68 to place 11th (+3, 216). She made four birdies on #2, #4, #16 and #17 with only one bogey. Sophomore Clare Legaspi tied for 39th (+13, 226) following a final-round 78 (+7) on two birdies (#3 and #16) and nine bogeys.
Next up for the Bruins is a trip to Kohala, Hawai'i and the Nanea Golf Club for the Nanea Pac-12 Preview (Oct. 23-24).
