UCLA head women's volleyball coach Michael Sealy has announced his 2017 signing class, as Devon Chang (Newport Beach, Calif./Santa Margarita Catholic HS/A4 Volley Club), Lexi Hadrych (Murrieta, Calif./Vista Murrieta HS/Coast Volleyball Club) and Hawley Harrer (Sisters, Ore./Sisters HS/Athena Volleyball Club) have each signed their National Letters of Intent. The trio will join the Bruins next fall.
ย
Chang, a 5-11 setter, is a four-year starter at Santa Margarita Catholic under coach Katy Daly. This season, she has been named an AVCA/Under Armour Second Team All-American, a PrepVolleyball Senior Ace #39 and to the MaxPreps National Player of the Year Midseason Watch List. As a junior, Chang was a PrepVolleyball, MaxPreps, FloVolleyball and Volleyball Magazine All-American, as well as a finalist for PrepVolleyball and MaxPreps National Junior of the Year. She was also named the Cal-Hi Sports California State Junior of the Year, MaxPreps Junior Class All-American, Cal-Hi Sports and MaxPreps All-State and All-CIF Division I, All-Trinity League and Orange County Register All-Orange County First Team. Chang registered 1,207 assists (11.3 per set), 105 blocks (1.0 per set) and 220 digs in 2016.
ย
"Devon has shown that she can be successful at a very high level," Sealy said. "She runs a fast offense and has played on and against the best club teams in the country. Devon is a very good right side blocker and plays great defense. She is a volleyball student and thinks her way through matches, creating the best opportunity for her teams to be successful."
ย
Last season, Chang helped the Eagles to a CIF-Southern Section Division I Championship and a Southern California Open Division Regional title, as well as a finalist spot in the California State Open Division and a Trinity League Championship, with SMCHS earning a No. 5 national ranking from PrepVolleyball and MaxPreps. Chang plays club with A4 Volley under coach Joaquin Acosta. She was All-Tournament at the USAV 2017 Junior Nationals 18 Open, named to the JVA 2017 Club All-National Team and recognized as a PrepVolleyball 2017 Club and AAU Academic All-American. A4 Volley won the JVA West Coast Cup 18 Open, the SCVA National Qualifier 18 Open and the Golden State National Qualifier 18 Open in 2017. Chang has also competed with the USA Youth and USA Select National Teams.
ย
"It's been my dream to play volleyball at UCLA since I was seven years old, and I love the championship tradition," Chang said.
ย
Hadrych, a 6-1 outside hitter, earned two All-Southwestern League First Team honors as a junior and senior for Vista Murrieta under coach Kristen Cooke and Ed Taitano. This season so far, she has been named an AVCA/Under Armour Second Team All-American and is up for Athlete of the Year. VMHS made the CIF Second Round, improving one spot from its 2016 tournament showing. Hadrych was a team captain as a senior, MaxPreps Player of the Month once and MaxPreps Player of the Match four times, helping the Broncos to victory at the Queens Court tournament.
ย
"Lexi has an elite arm," Sealy said. "She hits with great velocity and has shown an ability to hit with exceptional range. Lexi is a shutdown blocker, plays high above the net on the offensive and defensive side of the ball and is a backrow attacking threat as well. She has been a primary passer on her teams and will continue to improve in ball control areas of the game."
ย
Hadrych, a PrepVolleyball Senior Ace #46, recorded 1,148 kills for her high school career in 291 sets, hitting .375 with 618 digs, 107 aces and 91 blocks. She plays club with Coast Volleyball under coaches Ozhan Bageambeygui, Andy Kim and Jimmy Gekas. In her 18s year, Coast Volleyball was first in the SCVA and third in the Long Beach Tournament, as she played a year above her age. Coast was also first in SCVA in her 16s season.
ย
"I decided to attend UCLA because it was a great fit for me," Hadrych said. "When visiting the campus, the school felt like home. I knew it was a great school both academically and volleyball wise."
ย
Harrer, a 6-2 setter/outside hitter, was a four-sport star at Sisters High, playing four years of volleyball and swimming, three seasons of tennis and one year of track. The three-time Sky-Em League Player of the Year was also named First Team All-League four times and First Team All-State thrice. In both her junior and senior seasons, the Outlaws won Oregon State titles, as Harrer was named the Player of the Match both times, earning All-Tournament Team accolades. As a junior, she was the 4A Player of the Year and a finalist for the Oregon Sports Award Athlete of the Year and Volleyball Player of the Year.
ย
"Hawley is a great all-around volleyball player," Sealy said. "She is the equivalent of a five-tool baseball player in that she can run a fast-tempo offense as a setter, be a physical attacker, a shutdown blocker, a serving threat and an all-around, ball-control player. Hawley is a great competitor and will bring intensity to the practice gym and a high standard of performance."
ย
Harrer currently plays club with Athena Volleyball under coach Susan Denham and has also played with Rimrock. She also attended the USA Volleyball Holiday Camp in 2016.
ย
"UCLA is an amazing university with exceptional academics and athletics," Harrer said. "The athletic heritage at UCLA is so rich and I admire the influence of John Wooden throughout the university."
