UCLA head men's golf coach Derek Freeman has announced his 2017 signing class, as Ahmed Ali (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto HS), Sean Maruyama (Encino, Calif./Campbell Hall School) and Bryan Wiyang Teoh (Jupiter, Fla./Jupiter Christian School) have each signed their National Letters of Intent. The trio will join the Bruins next fall.
Ali helped Palo Alto earn a spot in last spring's Central Coast Section Tournament, while also advancing to the NorCals as an individual. He shot a 7-under 64 at the CCS Region I Tournament last spring to earn medalist honors, while also finishing second at the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League Tournament. Ali also participated in the NCGA/CIF NorCal Golf Championships as a sophomore. In 2015, he qualified for the U.S. Junior Amateur Championship, where he tied for 42nd in stroke play and advanced to the round of 64 in match play.
"We first saw Ahmed when he was a junior at about 13 years old," Freeman said. "He is a player that continues his development every day by his hard work and commitment. As a coach, you need players to raise everyone else around them, and we believe that Ahmed will be one of those leaders. He is very early in his total success in this game. Ahmed has won tournaments at every level he has competed and it will just be a matter of time before he does that at UCLA."
This summer, Maruyama won the CIF State/SCGA Southern California Regional boys golf championship and tied for second at the CIF State boys golf championship. He was named the 2017 Los Angeles Daily News Golfer of the Year and a two-time All-Gold Coast League MVP and First Teamer as a sophomore and junior, winning the league individual title in 2017. Maruyama has competed with the AJGA for four seasons, getting to No. 8 in the AJGA rankings and earning a spot on the Wyndham Cup West Team in 2017. The 2016 Second Team Rolex Junior All-American earned his first national tournament title at the 2016 Western Junior PGA. Maruyama's father, Shigeki, was a three-time winner on the PGA TOUR, also winning 10 times in Japan and earning spots on the 1998 and 2000 Presidents Cup teams with the International squad.
"Sean was a player that we focused on very early in the recruiting process," Freeman said. "He has this great ability to always be near the top of the leaderboard. Sean has been very successful in his junior career and we fully expect him to continue that at UCLA. He is a very good student and will transition very well into our program. Sean comes from a golf family, and as he grew up watching his father play, he learned things that are invaluable in golf."
Teoh has spent his last two years in Florida after attending Jit Sin High School in Malaysia in 2013 and 2014. While at Jupiter Christian, he won the 2016 District title, finishing second in the Region and fourth in State. JCHS won the All-District and All-Region Championships in 2016. Teoh was the school's MVP in 2015 and 2016 and Male Athlete of the Year and National Honor Society member as a junior. As a sophomore, he was third in the District and fourth in Region and State, setting a nine-hole school record with a 32 at PGA National. With the AJGA, Teoh was a 2017 Rolex Junior All-American Honorable Mention selection and a 2016 Junior All-America First Team honoree, as well as a member of the '17 Wyndham Cup East Team.
"We are very excited about Bryan joining the team next year," Freeman said. "Bryan has spent his high school days in Florida while playing a national junior golf schedule. He has traveled all over the world playing competitively at the very highest level. Bryan has won numerous times and that has given him great confidence. He has the ability to control the golf ball as much as any professional. We see him having an immediate impact on the team."
