BERKELEY, Calif. - Freshman Mac May was the lone player on either side of the court in double figures in kills with 10, adding five digs and four blocks, while senior Sarah Sponcil recorded 39 assists and seven digs, as the 18th-ranked Bruins swept California on Sunday at Haas Pavilion. Set scores were 25-23, 25-23, 25-15.
ย
Junior Kyra Rogers posted nine kills and just one error in 12 attempts for a .667 hitting percentage to go with four digs. Freshman Jenny Mosser added eight kills and nine digs, senior Reily Buechler had eight kills and seven digs and sophomore Madeleine Gates tallied eight kills and seven blocks. Junior Zana Muno had 11 digs and sophomore Savvy Simo notched five. The Bruins hit .241 for the match.
ย
The Bruins (17-10, 10-8 Pac-12) scored the first three points of the match on kills by Rogers and Buechler and a Gates/May block, but the Golden Bears (13-16, 4-14 Pac-12) responded with 10 in a row to go up by seven. Four in a row for UCLA on a Gates kill and block with Buechler, a May ace and a Cal error got the Bruins back within three. UCLA still trailed by four as late as 22-18 before going on a 7-1 run to end the opening set and steal the victory. Five in a row on kills by Gates, Rogers and Buechler and two Bear errors gave the Bruins a 23-22 edge. After a sideout, kills by Mosser and Rogers wrapped up the 25-23 victory. Rogers paced UCLA with four kills, while Buechler and Gates each had three. Muno added six digs. The Bruins were out-hit .333 to .229.
ย
Set two featured eight ties and five lead changes, but the Bruins won by a similar 25-23 score to go up 2-0 in the match. Down 11-9, a May kill and two Cal errors gave the Bruins their first lead of the set at 12-11. The largest lead of the set for UCLA was just two on a few occasions. Trailing 21-20, the Bruins scored three in a row on kills by Rogers and Buechler and a Cal error to go up by two. The teams would trade the next four points, as a Gates kill on UCLA's second set point gave the visitors another deuce win. May led the Bruins with seven kills, while Gates, Mosser and Rogers all had three. Buechler, Simo and Sponcil each posted four digs. The Bruins out-hit the Bears .231 to .125.
ย
There was no doubt in set three, as the Bruins scored the first seven points on kills by Buechler and Gates, four blocks (three by Gates and May and one solo by Gates) and one Cal attack error. At 12-5, UCLA raised its lead to double figures for the first time thanks to a 6-0 run on four Mosser kills, a May kill and a Bear error to go ahead 18-5. A baker's dozen was the largest lead for UCLA, as back-to-back Cal errors closed out a 25-15 win in the third. Buechler and Mosser each had four kills for the Bruins, while Mosser added four digs, as the Bruins out-hit the Golden Bears .265 to .152.
ย
The Bruins have a quick turnaround, traveling to Corvallis on Tuesday for a Wednesday 1 p.m. match at Oregon State. The contest will have a live video stream on UCLABruins.com.
