LOS ANGELES -- The No. 8/7 UCLA women's basketball team registered a victory in its lone exhibition contest of 2017-18, defeating NAIA opponent Vanguard at Pauley Pavilion, 87-40.

All 10 Bruins scored on the afternoon, with senior Monique Billings and freshman Michaela Onyenwere tying for the team lead with 14 points. Billings played just 17 minutes. Newcomer Chantel Horvat recorded a double-double in the win, scoring 12 points and pulling down 11 rebounds. Freshman Lauryn Miller added 12 points as true freshmen accounted for 42 in all.

Onyenwere also pulled down nine rebounds and matched senior Jordin Canada with five steals. Canada put in a well-rounded effort, totaling eight points, four rebounds, six assists and her five takeaways in 21 minutes.

Both teams struggled to find their footing early, with the Lions missing 10 of 11 in the opening frame and the Bruins connecting on just one of their first eight shots. At the first break in the action, UCLA led Vanguard by just a 4-2 score and turned to a full-court press that quickly turned the tide. A steal and score by Billings gave the Bruins a 6-2 lead and they never looked back. UCLA would score 14 of 15 points over the final 4:57 of the first quarter to take a commanding 18-3 lead.

The media timeout again proved to be a friend of the Bruins in the second. Entering the quarter's midway break, the Lions had scored six of the game's last 11 points. Coming out, UCLA scored the next 13 to complete a 15-0 run and give the Bruins a 38-11 advantage. The first-year players were instrumental to the run, as Horvat and Onyenwere completed the half with a team-high-tying eight points apiece, including six each in the second quarter.

The third quarter proved to be much of the same, as Bruin stalwarts Billings, Burke and Canada scored the first seven points of the second half. The rest of the quarter belonged to the freshmen, though, as 13 of the 15 points were scored by Horvat, redshirt freshman Lindsey Corsaro, Miller and Onyenwere. Canada dished out three assists in her six minutes on the court.

The Bruins scored 56 points in the paint, doing most of their damage inside the arc. UCLA was without a three-point field goal until the fourth, when Corsaro and Kelli Hayes each connected from distance. Ally Rosenblum knocked down a free throw at 2:33 of the frame, becoming the 10th and final Bruin to tickle the twine. The lead reached a game-high 50 points with just under a minute remaining, when Rosenblum laid one in to make it 85-35.

Vanguard shot just 24% from the field, making 12 of 49 shots. The Lions turned the ball over 23 times, leading to 33 Bruin points. UCLA also made the most of a 64-28 rebounding advantage, pouring in 30 second-chance points to Vanguard's three.

Amber Alexander was the only Lion to score in doubles figures. She had 10.

The Bruins will open their regular season Nov. 10, when they welcome San Jose State to Pauley Pavilion. Action will begin at 7:00 p.m. (PT).
