LOS ANGELES - Redshirt freshman Rachel Garcia picked up a win in game one of Saturday's doubleheader and the save in game two, as the 15th-ranked Bruins posted 1-0 and 4-2 victories in a twinbill sweep of BYU at Easton Stadium.
The Bruins improved to 23-8 overall with the two wins, while the Cougars fell to 21-9.
In game one, Garcia (8-4) struck out nine and walked four in a complete-game one-hitter. She had 1-2-3 innings in the second and fifth, striking out the side in the third and a pair in the first. The Bruins had five hits, as junior Kylee Perez recorded three of them on singles.
The lone run of the game came on one swing of the bat in the fifth, as sophomore Paige Halstead led off with a homer to right-center, her fourth of the season. The closest BYU came to scoring was in the sixth when it had runners at third and first with one out. But Garcia got a ground out and a pop up to end the threat.
In game two, Perez added two more hits, while senior Gabrielle Maurice and junior Madeline Jelenicki also had two-hit contests, as UCLA had nine hits as a team. Junior Johanna Grauer (8-3) struck out six in 6 1/3 innings, giving up two runs, six hits and two walks. Garcia got the final two outs, striking out one and giving up a hit and a walk to post her first save of the season.
The Bruins scored the game's first run in the third inning, as Perez led off with a triple to right and scored on a double to right-center by senior Delaney Spaulding. In the fifth, UCLA added three more. Sophomore Zoe Shaw led off with a double and moved to third on a bunt single by Perez. Then on a delayed double steal, the throw down to second to try and get Perez was dropped by the BYU second baseman, allowing Shaw to score the Bruins' second run. Spaulding followed with a walk, and after a sacrifice by sophomore Brianna Tautalafua, Jelenicki singled up the middle to plate a pair to make it 4-0.
BYU finally got on the board in the seventh on a two-run double by Briielle Breland, and would end up loading the bases with two outs, but Garcia retired the final batter on a strikeout to end the game.
The Bruins finish out the weekend on Sunday, hosting Dartmouth at 10 a.m. at Easton Stadium. Live audio and stats will be available at UCLABruins.com.
