SEATTLE, Wash. - Redshirtย freshman Rachel Garcia struck out six in a five-hit complete game, while also going 2-for-4 with a two-run homer, as the 13th-ranked Bruins defeated #8 Washington 6-2 on Friday at Husky Softball Stadium.
The Bruins improve to 25-8 overall and 1-3 in Pac-12 play, while the Huskies fall to 26-7 and 3-4 in league action.
Garcia, who moved to 9-4 on the season, struck out the side in the second and a pair in the fifth, adding a 1-2-3 inning in the sixth. She gave up two runs (one earned) and four walks in her seven innings of work. UCLA had 10 hits from seven different players, as junior Kylee Perez and sophomore Paige Halstead each added two-hit contests.
The Bruins scored in each of their first two at-bats, scoring both times on two-out rallies. Perez led off the game with a double to left-center, and two outs later, came home on a single to left by junior Madeline Jelenicki. In the second. senior Gabrielle Maurice reached on an infield single to second, and two outs later, back-to-back singles by Perez and senior Delaney Spaulding scored Maurice to increase the Bruins' lead to 2-0.
Washington evened things over the next two innings, scoring a run on an error in the second and tying the game in the bottom of the third on a leadoff homer by Ali Aguilar.
UCLA would never trail in the game however, scoring another run with two outs in the fourth. Maurice and freshman Bubba Nickles were hit by pitches to start the inning. Two outs later, a Spaulding walk loaded the bases for sophomore Brianna Tautalafua, who singled to left to plate Maurice to make it 3-2.
In the sixth, the Bruins added another. Nickles reached second after a leadoff error, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a Perez sacrifice fly to extend the lead to 4-2.
Two more runs scored with two outs thanks to one swing of the bat in the seventh. Halstead singled to left and Garcia crushed her second home run of the season to dead center to put the Bruins ahead 6-2.
The Bruins and the Huskies continue their three-game series on Saturday at 4 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on Pac-12 Network National and Los Angeles.
