April 28, 2017 | Track & Field
LOS ANGELES โ The UCLA track and field squad is gearing up for the much-anticipated dual meet with USC on Sunday, April 30 at the Loker Track Stadium on the campus of USC.ย
The hammer throw competition will officially begin the meet on Saturday at 1 p.m., at El Camino College in Torrance, Calif. The meet will be televised live from 1-3 p.m., on the Pac-12 Network on Sunday.
The Bruins split last year's dual meet at Drake Stadium, with the UCLA men defeating the men of Troy, 103-60, and the women's squad falling 97-63.
The men's squad looks to gain even more ground on the Trojans as they trail in the all-time series, 43-40. UCLA also looks to improve upon its impressive 22-11 record in the women's competition.
The Bruins will certainly have their hands full with the Trojans this weekend. The current USTFCCCA national poll places the USC men seventh in the country while the women of Troy will come into the dual meet as the No. 5 squad in the nation. The UCLA men enter the weekend 18th in the country.
UCLA is coming off strong performances in their recent three-meet homestand, and the trip to the Triton Invite in San Diego, and the team comes into the crosstown battle with 15 nationally ranked marks.
Sophomore Dotun Ogundeji looks to capitalize on the momentum he picked up in San Diego last weekend where he launched a throw of 66-3 in the shot put and 182-2 in the discus and earned Pac-12 Field Athlete of the Week honors. His mark in the shot was a personal best and is fifth in the country and seventh in school history. His disc throw was also an all-time best.
Sophomore Ashlie Blake also uncorked a personal best throw of 54-10 in the women's shot put competition at the Triton Invite, a mark that places her 17th in the nation this year.
The Bruin high jumpers also continue to hold strong in the national rankings. Freshman Mikella Lefebvre-Oatis remains third in the country with her impressive clearance of 6-0.75. Freshman Isaiah Holmes and Sophomore Michael Burke will look to improve upon their marks of 7-2.50 which keep them tied for sixth in the country. All three athletes posted these marks at the UCLA Legends Invitational.
On the track side, sophomore Rai Benjamin is currently ninth in the country in the 400-meter hurdles with his time of 50.12. Junior Misana Viltz is 25th in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 13.95.
Senior Austin O'Neil is currently seventh in the country in the 3000-meter steeplechase with his time of 8:44.86 while junior Daniel De La Torre's time of 13:46.14 holds as the No. 16 mark nationally.
The postseason will begin for the Bruins as the multis will head to Corvallis, Ore., on Saturday, May 6 to start the Pac-12 Combined Events Championships. The full championship will begin the next weekend on Saturday, May 13 at Eugene, Ore.ย
