Sarah Sponcil to Join Bruins for 2017 Season

UCLA head women's volleyball coach Michael Sealy has announced the addition of Sarah Sponcil to the Bruins' roster for the 2017 season. A transfer from Loyola Marymount, Sponcil will have one year of eligibility remaining for the indoor team.

Sponcil, a 5-foot-10 outside hitter from Phoenix, Ariz., played three seasons at LMU, picking up a pair of All-American Honorable Mention accolades as a junior and sophomore. She was also AVCA Pacific South All-Region each of those seasons, 2014 Pacific South Regional Freshman of the Year and a two-time All-West Coast Conference First Team honoree (2015-2016).

"Sarah brings a wealth of volleyball knowledge and talent to our team," Sealy said. "She will bring valuable experience to a very young and talented team. She is a driven competitor who plays at a very high level and was a cornerstone at a very successful LMU program. Sarah can help us in a variety of ways on the court and I am excited to see the impact that she is going to have."

Sponcil, the 2016 WCC Defensive Player of the Year, led the Lions in kills last season with 402, averaging 3.65 per set. She also tied for the team lead in aces (26) and was second on the team in digs (328/2.98 per set). Sponcil had 16 double-doubles a year ago, 25 double-figure kills contests and 20 double-digit digs matches.

Sponcil, who will also have two years of eligibility remaining for the UCLA beach volleyball team, was also tops on the LMU squad in kills (477/3.58 per set) as a sophomore, adding a team-best 36 aces and 363 digs (2.90 per set). She garnered a pair of WCC Player of the Week honors.
