HONOLULU, Hawai'i -ย While most of the world was concentrating on a May-Mac fight, it was Mac May doing the damage in Honolulu, as the freshman went for 17 kills to help the 13th-ranked Bruins to a four-set victory over Marquette on Saturday at the Stan Sheriff Center.
ย
The Bruins, who move to 2-0 on the season, had a pair of seniors achieve double-doubles, as Sarah Sponcil recorded 48 assists and 14 digs, while Reily Buechler notched 11 kills and 12 digs. Junior Kyra Rogers tied a career high with 10 kills and set a personal best with a .421 hitting percentage to go with five digs. Junior Zana Muno had 18 digs and sophomore Savvy Simo posted 12 digs. Freshman Jenny Mosser tallied nine kills and just one error in 17 attempts for a .471 percentage, while sophomore Madeleine Gates added eight kills and seven blocks. The Bruins hit .259 for the match.
ย
Marquette (1-1) held as much as a two-point edge in set one before the Bruins scored four in a row to take the lead for good. Down 7-5, a bad Golden Eagle set, kills by Sponcil and May and a Buechler ace made it 9-7 UCLA. Marquette got to within one on a few occasions, but could not even the score again. At 15-13, a 6-1 run broke it open. Gates had two kills and a solo stuff during the run, Buechler added a kill and Marquette committed two errors.
ย
At 22-16, the Bruins netted the final three of the opener on a Marquette service error, a May ace and a combo block by Mosser and Rogers to clinch a 25-16 win. Buechler, Gates and May all had three kills in the first set, while Muno added five digs, as the Bruins out-hit the Golden Eagles .375 to .222.
ย
The Bruins led throughout most of set two to go up 2-0 in the match. UCLA scored three of the first four points on a Rogers kill and two Marquette errors, but the Golden Eagles posted the next three to take a 4-3 edge. The lead would be brief, as UCLA scored five of the next six on three Mosser kills and two Marquette errors. The Bruins took an 8-5 lead, which they would not relinquish for the rest of the second.
ย
Marquette tied the score at 12, 13 and 14-all, but kills by Buechler and May and two Rogers aces gave the Bruins an 18-14 advantage. The teams sided out the next 12 points, with a Marquette attack error on UCLA's first set point giving the Bruins a 25-20 win. Mosser led UCLA with four kills, while Buechler and May each added three. Buechler also had five digs, as the Bruins held a .296-.216 hitting advantage.
ย
The Bruins' largest lead of set three was just one. Trailing 3-2, Marquette went on a 6-2 run and led for the rest of the third. A 4-1 UCLA run on kills by Mosser, Buechler, Gates and May evened the score at nine. It was still tied at 10, but eight of the next 11 went to Marquette, which went on to win the third, 25-20. May had five kills in the third, Gates added four and Buechler posted three kills. Sponcil added six digs, as the Bruins were out-hit .364 to .278.
ย
It appeared that the match was headed to a fifth set, but a late comeback ended the festivities in four. The Bruins raced out to a 6-1 lead on three kills by May, two from Rogers and a Marquette attack error. With UCLA still up 8-3, a 16-5 run for the Golden Eagles gave them a 19-13 lead. That is when the Bruins began their comeback.
ย
UCLA closed to within 22-19 and then scored five in a row on a Gates kill, a Marquette attack error, a May kill, a Gates/Sponcil block and a Golden Eagle attack error to earn a match point. Marquette saved the first one, but another Gates/Sponcil roof finished off a 25-23 victory. May had six kills in the fourth and Rogers added five. Muno recorded nine digs, while Buechler and Sponcil each notched six digs. The Bruins won the hitting battle .154-.130.
