UCLA Restores Center Court Logo in Pauley Pavilion

September 05, 2017 | General, Women's Basketball

As Pauley Pavilion prepares for its 52nd season of basketball, UCLA will restore the arena's iconic circular U-C-L-A logo at the center of Nell and John Wooden Court this fall.

Currently undergoing regular offseason maintenance, Nell and John Wooden Court will feature the longtime center circle logo as the department continues to consolidate logos, wordmarks and colors.

"Over the past several months, our branding initiative has focused on building a clean, cohesive look that continues to promote the most classic parts of the UCLA brand," said Dan Guerrero, UCLA's Director of Athletics. "Our evaluation of this initiative, both in our uniforms and venues, has shown a few specific places where we've wanted to maintain UCLA's tradition. For football, we're talking about the tail underneath the UCLA script of our helmet. In basketball, restoring the classic center court logo is a fitting tribute to the tradition of both the men's and women's programs."

Current renovations to Nell and John Wooden Court will be completed this month, in time for the start of the men's and women's basketball practices and women's volleyball games.

"The center circle logo has been a mainstay in Pauley Pavilion, so I'm very excited that we're bringing it back," UCLA men's basketball head coach Steve Alford said. "That logo represents so much to our basketball program. It's a vivid reminder for our guys of all the great UCLA teams, players, coaches and moments that have come before us."

"I love that when we made Pauley Pavilion a state-of-the-art facility, we maintained the history of the program," UCLA women's basketball head coach Cori Close said. "The center logo is an expression of us honoring our past, a past which established the level of excellence that we measure ourselves against. We are always moving forward, seeking excellence, and I'm excited we can do that while honoring those who came before us."

Similar to previous summers, UCLA's Nell and John Wooden Court has undergone standard maintenance for a variety of reasons – touching up logos and wordmarks, adjusting court lines and perimeter marks as needed with NCAA basketball rule changes, and fixing scratched or blemished portions of the court's playing surface.

The men's basketball team will return to Pauley Pavilion against Cal State Los Angeles for an exhibition game the night of Wednesday, Nov. 1, three days before the Bruins will depart for Shanghai, China, for their season opener against Georgia Tech (Nov. 10).

The women's basketball team will face Vanguard University in an exhibition game in Pauley Pavilion on Sunday, Nov. 5, before opening the regular season at home versus San Jose State on Friday, Nov. 10.
