BERKELEY, Calif. โ No. 13-ranked UCLA dropped an 8-3 decision to Cal in Friday night's series opener at Evans Diamond.
The Bruins (25-12, 9-7 Pac-12) drew first blood in the game, but Cal (19-18, 10-9) hit three consecutive solo homers in the bottom of the first and never relinquished that lead.
The Golden Bears went on to score in three consecutive innings starting in the fifth to expand their advantage.
UCLA was led offensively by freshman shortstop Cody Schrier (2-5) and junior center field Michael Curialle (2-4), who had a pair of base hits apiece.
Graduate left fielder Kenny Oyama scorched a ball over the right-center field fence for his second home run of the year in the ninth, and sophomore right fielder JonJon Vaughns knocked in a run with an RBI single in the sixth.
Schrier started the game's scoring in the top of the first, bashing the very first pitch of the contest into right field for a leadoff single. He moved to third following a walk and sacrifice bunt, which allowed him to score on a one-hopper up the middle from sophomore third baseman Kyle Karros.
Cal hit a total of five home runs on the day, all coming from the top-three hitters in the order. Leadoff man Nathan Mortorella and three-hitter Hance Smith each had a pair of home runs.
Steven Zobac and Josh White teamed up to throw four innings apiece for the Golden Bears, combining for just two earned runs against.
UCLA and Cal resume the series on Saturday afternoon at 3:05 p.m. PT.
