Bruins Sprint Past Roadrunners in 18-1 Win

LOS ANGELES – The No. 2 UCLA softball team tallied 11 hits in its 18-1 mercy-rule victory over CSU Bakersfield on day two of the Stacy Winsberg Memorial Tournament at Easton Stadium Friday night. Sophomore Taylor Stephens connected for the first two hits of her collegiate career in the form of a double and home run.
After smacking a double to center field in the second inning to knock in her first RBI, Stephens laced a rocket off the left field foul pole in the fourth to score UCLA's (2-0) 18th and final run of the night. It was the Bruins' first home run of the season.
In the circle, Lauren Shaw struck out a pair of Roadrunners (0-2) and allowed just two hits, earning her first win of the season.
Third baseman Megan Grant, who picked up two hits and an RBI double in her collegiate debut last night, opened a 12-run first inning with a sacrifice fly to right field which allowed Savannah Pola to tag up from third. After a stretch of seven walks, Grant dug into the batter's box once more in the inning and smacked a single up the middle to score two more Bruins, stretching UCLA's lead to 9-0. The Bruins nearly hit around the lineup twice and made 16 total plate appearances in the frame.
The 12 runs are tied for sixth-most in a single inning in UCLA history. The last time the Bruins scored 12-plus runs in an inning was versus CSUN on 2022 Opening Night.
The Bruins' defense flashed the leather as well. Following an error to begin the game, Grant snagged a line drive at the hot corner and doubled off the Roadrunner at first base to turn the double play. The very next play, Anna Vines laid out for a spectacular diving grab behind second base. Vines and shortstop Maya Brady nearly turned a double play in the third inning when Vines dove for another ball and, on the ground, flipped the ball from her glove to get the force out at second.
Seneca Curo recorded a pair of RBI singles in her 2-for-2 night.
Lauryn Carter notched the first triple of her career with a ball that squirted past the Roadrunners' right fielder. Also picking up her first career hit and RBI was freshman Kennedy Powell with a double to left field in the second inning to score Carter.
Stacy Winsberg Memorial Tournament play continues Saturday, beginning with Utah State versus Loyola Marymount at 10 a.m. (PT). The Bruins will play two games later in the day against Loyola Marymount (3 p.m.) and CSU Bakersfield (5:30 p.m.). Both contests are available for viewing on the UCLA Live Stream.
