Savannah Pola Resilient in Bruins’ 4-3 Comeback Win

CLEARWATER, Fla. – The No. 2 UCLA softball team took the lead with two runs in the top of the seventh inning to defeat Louisiana, 4-3, to close the TaxAct Clearwater Invitational on Sunday.
The Bruins (12-0) went a perfect 5-0 versus their opponents in the tournament. UCLA also went 5-0 at the 2020 rendition of the event.
Sophomore second baseman Savannah Pola stepped to the plate in the seventh inning with the tying run on second base and two outs. Pola, who had a throwing error earlier in the game that led to the Ragin' Cajuns (5-4) taking the lead, redeemed herself with a base hit into left field to score Lauryn Carter and tie the game, 3-3.
Maya Brady followed Pola with a base hit into right field. An errant throw by right fielder Kramer Eschete to third base allowed Pola to scramble home for the game-winning run.
Megan Faraimo put together back-to-back three-up, three-down innings to end the game. Four of those six outs came by way of strikeout. With her win today, Faraimo moves to 7-0 on the season in just eight pitching appearances.
UCLA scored its first run of the game in the first inning on a Sharlize Palacios solo home run to left center. It was her third longball of the year. Freshman Kennedy Powell hit her third RBI base hit of the tournament two innings later to extend the Bruins' lead to 2-0.
The Bruins continue their slate of preseason tournaments with six games at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic in Cathedral City, Calif., from Feb. 23-26. UCLA will face three opponents from last year's Women's College World Series in Oklahoma, Florida and Northwestern.
