No. 1 Bruins Fall to No. 2 Oklahoma in Mary Nutter Finale

February 26, 2023 | Softball

CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. – The No. 1 UCLA softball team suffered its first loss of the 2023 season Sunday, falling to No. 2 Oklahoma in a 14-0 mercy-rule decision on the fourth and final day of the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic at Big League Dreams Sports Park.

Megan Faraimo (9-1) surrendered four earned runs on seven hits in 1.2 innings for the Bruins (17-1), striking out three. Lauren Shaw and Taylor Tinsley also spent time in the circle. Both of Kennedy Powell's plate appearances resulted in base hits, while fellow freshman Megan Grant added one of her own.

Alex Storako (4-0) gave up the three hits and struck out five in a complete-game effort for the Sooners (13-1). OU logged six home runs on the day, with four coming during a two-out, second-inning rally. Kinzie Hansen hit two home runs and drove in five. Jayda Coleman, Tiare Jennings and Haley Lee had three hits apiece.

With a full count and two outs in the top of the second inning, Alyssa Brito deposited a Faraimo pitch beyond the center-field fence. Coleman then took a 2-2 offering to the opposite field, just out of left fielder Powell's reach for a home run of her own. Grace Lyons kept the rally going with a single to center before the Sooners went back to the long ball, as Jennings drove a 0-2 pitch to deep left field and Faraimo from the game.

Jocelyn Erickson singled to right field with Shaw on in relief. Lee then capped the scoring by way of a home run to left-center field. OU tallied seven consecutive hits and six runs in the inning.

Two more runs scored with two outs in the top half of the third, with Jennings doubling off Tinsley to bring Rylie Boone and Coleman home. Hansen homered to center in the fourth to score two and, following an RBI single by Grace Green, added a three-run shot to left in the fifth to complete the scoring.

UCLA next competes at the Judi Garman Classic in Fullerton, Calif., set for Friday, March 3 through Sunday, March 5. Cal State Fullerton's Anderson Family Field provides the backdrop, with the Bruins facing off against UCF (2:30 p.m. PT) and Fresno State (5 p.m.) on Day 1.
