No. 3 UCLA Beats Oregon, 7-4, to Even Series
March 25, 2023 | Softball
EUGENE, Ore. – Lauryn Carter's fourth-inning grand slam lifted the No. 3 UCLA softball team to a 7-4 victory over No. 19 Oregon at Jane Sanders Stadium on Saturday night.
Three straight one-out base hits loaded the pillows for Carter before she cashed in with the second home run of her career to give the Bruins (28-4, 5-3) a 5-2 lead they would not relinquish for the rest of the game. Before Carter stepped to the plate, redshirt senior Aaliyah Jordan notched her first base hit since February 2022 with a line-drive shot to the pitcher.
Carter's home run marked her first since the third game of her freshman season against San Diego State on February 24, 2021. Her four runs batted in are also a career high.
A two-run homer by Oregon catcher Terra McGowan in the bottom of the sixth inning cut UCLA's lead to just one. In the seventh, Sharlize Palacios answered with a two-run shot of her own to provide the Bruins with some much-needed insurance. Palacios is tied for second on the team with six home runs this season.
Megan Faraimo threw 6.2 innings of relief with eight strikeouts en route to her Pac-12-leading 14th win of the season. The Oceanside, Calif. native allowed seven hits, two walks and two earned runs in her outing. Faraimo leads the conference with 135 strikeouts this year.
Oregon (21-8, 3-5) took its first and only lead of the game in the bottom half of the first. An RBI single by Allee Bunker into right field tied the score, and two batters later, Vallery Wong hit a dribbler to Woolery at first base who could not gather the ball, allowing another Ducks' run.
Savannah Pola, Janelle Meoño, Anna Vines and Megan Grant also recorded base hits.
UCLA will look to take the rubber match against the Ducks tomorrow at 12 p.m. (PT). Game three will be broadcasted on the Pac-12 Networks.

In the first inning, redshirt Maya Brady blooped a base hit over the Ducks' third baseman's head and legged it into a double to kickstart the Bruins' offense. The next batter, Jordan Woolery, knocked Brady in with a single to the wall for her 27th RBI of the season. Woolery also singled off the first pitch she saw to lead off the top of the seventh before she was brought home by Palacios' blast.TOUCH 'EM ALL, @LAURYNCCARTER!!! ??#GoBruins pic.twitter.com/8QI86AZpoH
