Faraimo Masterful in 4-0 Shutout of No. 6 Stanford
March 31, 2023 | Softball
LOS ANGELES โ Megan Faraimo struck out a season-high 15 batters to lead the No. 3 UCLA softball team to a 4-0 victory over No. 6 Stanford at Easton Stadium on Friday night.
ย
Faraimo, who picked up her second shutout over a top-10 opponent this season, improves her record to 16-2, leading the Pac-12 in victories. This also marked the 35th double-digit strikeout outing of Faraimo's career.
ย
While Faraimo dominated the circle, the Bruins' (30-4, 7-3) offensive charge was led by junior Lauryn Carter who went 2-for-2 and scored UCLA's go-ahead run in the third inning. After leading off the frame with a base hit to right field, Carter scampered home off a single by Anna Vines and subsequent throwing error by Cardinal (28-4, 5-2) right fielder Kaitlyn Lim.
ย
Vines now owns a lifetime batting average of .461 (6-for-13) off Stanford starting pitcher Alana Vawter. In total, Vawter allowed four earned runs off eight base hits and two walks.
ย
The Bruins tacked on one more in the third thanks to a single to left field by Maya Brady which brought home Janelle Meoño. Brady continues to lead the conference with a .461 batting average.
ย
UCLA ran into two outs before the inning came to an end. An unsuccessful delayed double steal led to Vines being thrown out at home for the first out and Brady was gunned down by Lim in right field attempting to score from second base on Jordan Woolery's base hit for the final out.
ย
Faraimo's first six outs of the game came by way of strikeout. With the blanking, Faraimo lowers her earned run average to 1.26. She leads the Pac-12 with 151 strikeouts.
ย
Carter's heroics continued in the bottom of the sixth when she added two crucial insurance runs. The Inglewood, Calif. native recorded the Bruins' third two-out base hit of the inning with a bloop single down the right field line to score a pair, stretching UCLA's lead to 4-0. Before last week, Carter had just one multi-RBI game in her career coming in the third game of her freshman season. She now has six RBI across her last three games.
ย
Stanford pieced together a seventh-inning rally with two singles and a walk to bring the tying run up to the plate with two outs. Faraimo proceeded to send the Cardinal's No. 4 hitter Kaitlyn Lim down on strikes to put the final nail in the coffin.
ย
The Bruins look to secure the series win versus Stanford tomorrow night at 7 p.m. (PT) at Easton Stadium. Fans can watch the action on the UCLA Live Stream with UCLA softball alumnae Tara Henry and Jen Schroeder on the call.
