Palacios Makes Titans Pay in No. 2 Bruins’ Win

FULLERTON, Calif. – The No. 2 UCLA softball team defeated Cal State Fullerton, 6-2, in the Judi Garman Classic finale at Anderson Family Field on Sunday. The Bruins (22-1) finished the tournament a perfect 5-0.
Sharlize Palacios stepped to the plate with the bases loaded in the top of the sixth with a chance to break the game wide open, but it was not before Titans (11-9) pitcher Raci Miranda intentionally walked Maya Brady, loading the bases to face the two-time All-Pac-12 catcher.
On a 3-1 count, Palacios ripped a ball down the right field line for a three-RBI, bases-clearing triple to push UCLA out to a 6-2 lead. It was the second triple of her career. Palacios is now tied for third on the team with 20 RBI and second with a .623 slugging percentage. Her three-bagger comes just one day after hitting the fifth grand slam of her career against Cal Poly.
The Bruins opened the scoring in the first inning with another RBI extra-base hit by Megan Grant. Grant is second on the team with 10 extra-base hits and 26 RBI this season.
A single into left field in the fourth inning by Jordan Woolery brought home Lauren Hatch to give the Bruins' a two-run buffer.
Brooke Yanez started in the circle would not allow a hit until the fifth inning when Fullerton's Daisy Munoz led off with a single. The very next batter, Evelyn Sablan, tied up the game with a two-run homer to left-center field. Yanez finished her outing with 5.0 innings pitched, seven strikeouts and her seventh victory of the season.
Prior to Palacios' triple, Savannah Pola put UCLA in the lead with a ball batted to Titans shortstop Peyton Toto which resulted in an overthrow and allowed Lauryn Carter to score.
Megan Faraimo entered in relief in the bottom half of the sixth and threw two scoreless innings.
The Bruins will host Howard on Tuesday, March 7 on HBCU Night at 6 p.m. (PT) at Easton Stadium. The game will be available for viewing on the UCLA Live Stream.
