Palacios Plays the Hero in 8-4 Comeback Win Over Arizona
April 15, 2023 | Softball
TUCSON, Ariz. – Sharlize Palacios hit a go-ahead, three-run home run to highlight a five-run, seventh-inning rally, leading the No. 2 UCLA softball team to an 8-4 victory against No. 24 Arizona at Hillenbrand Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The Bruins (38-4, 14-3) tallied four of their 13 hits in the seventh, beginning with freshman Jordan Woolery's third base hit of the game to put the tying run just 60 feet away for Aaliyah Jordan. The seventh-year veteran came through on the second pitch of her at-bat on a single up the middle to tie the game, 4-4.
Palacios stepped up to the plate next and found herself in an 0-2 count. The catcher deposited her eighth home run of the season with a no-doubt homer into the left field bleachers.
Rachel Cid entered the game in the fourth inning at third base and collected two doubles in each of her at-bats. Her second two-bagger was a line drive into the left-center gap in the seventh that scored Anna Vines to stretch the Bruins' lead to 8-4.
Megan Faraimo left nothing up to chance for the Wildcats (24-17, 3-11) and retired Arizona in order in the bottom half of the seventh to polish off her third scoreless inning of relief. Faraimo picked up her 21st win of the year, and in the process, established a new career-long scoreless innings streak of 34.0 dating back to March 25.
Arizona struck first with a four-run second inning off UCLA starter Brooke Yanez. Shortstop Sophia Carroll put the first runs on the board with a two-run home run. Allie Skaggs and Devyn Netz notched back-to-back RBI singles for the Wildcats' last runs of the game.
Freshman Taylor Tinsley held Arizona's bats at bay with three strikeouts in the third and fourth innings.
Maya Brady kicked the UCLA comeback into high gear in the fifth inning. After a leadoff single by Janelle Meoño, Brady launched her 14th home run of the year, her fifth against rival Arizona and second of the series with a two-run blast to right field. In her nine career games against Arizona, Brady has dominated with a .480 batting average (12-for-25), 1.280 slugging percentage, five home runs, five doubles and a .680 on-base percentage.
It was Brady's 50th homer of her career. Brady leads the Pac-12 with a .438 batting average and .893 slugging percentage and ranks second with 14 homers and 46 runs batted in.
UCLA has homered at least twice in each of its last five games and has a total of 11 homers across that stretch.
UCLA scored its first run of the game on a Brady sacrifice fly to left field in the third inning.
Also recording a hit for the Bruins was Megan Grant who stretches her hitting streak to 13 straight games.
Today's performance marked UCLA's third comeback win of the season and first since its 4-3 win over Louisiana on Feb. 19.
The Bruins go for their third consecutive Pac-12 sweep tomorrow in game three against Arizona at 12 p.m. (PT). The game will be televised on the Pac-12 Network with Tracy Warren and Kenzie Fowler on the call.
