Bruins Blast Season-High Five Homers in 14-5 Rout of Arizona
April 16, 2023 | Softball
TUCSON, Ariz. – The No. 2 UCLA softball team pounded out a season-high five home runs, including two by Megan Grant, in a 14-5 mercy-rule victory over No. 24 Arizona at Hillenbrand Stadium on Sunday.
The Bruins (39-4, 15-3) swept the series against the Wildcats (24-18, 3-12) for the second year in a row and have won seven straight against their fierce rival. UCLA has recorded at least two home runs in each of its last six games with 16 total longballs across that stretch.
Grant totaled five RBI in her first career two-homer game, four of which came on her first grand slam in the fifth inning that cleared the center field batter's eye.
UCLA recorded four straight hits in the first inning to get on the board just one out into the game. Aaliyah Jordan, who drove in the game-tying run in the seventh yesterday, followed with her second consecutive RBI single to score Maya Brady.
Sharlize Palacios stepped to the plate and replicated her game two magic with her second three-run home run of the series to push the Bruins out to a 4-0 advantage.
The next inning, Brady homered for the third straight game on a two-run blast to center field. The Thousand Oaks, Calif. native finished the game 3-for-4 and 5-for-10 in the series with five runs scored and seven runs batted in. In 10 career games against Arizona, Brady is batting for a .517 average (15-for-29) and 1.310 slugging percentage with six home runs, five doubles and 12 RBI.
With that home run, Brady matches her season-high of 15 home runs in 2022 (61 games) just 43 games into 2023. Brady has now left the yard in four straight games, becoming the first UCLA player since B.B. Bates in February 2013 to accomplish that feat.
Arizona scored its first run of the game on a throwing error by Savannah Pola that sailed past Jordan Woolery at first base in the bottom of the second. The Wildcats later hit back-to-back homers in the third inning to close UCLA's lead to 7-3.
Megan Faraimo allowed two earned runs and struck out three over four innings in her start. She picked up the win in every game of the series and is now tied for the NCAA lead in victories with 22 this year. Faraimo is six wins shy of becoming the fourth player in UCLA history to achieve 100 wins in a career.
The Bruins' talented freshman duo of Grant and Woolery responded in the top of the fourth with a pair of solo home runs. The two sluggers rank tied for first among Pac-12 freshmen in homers with nine this season.
UCLA loaded the bases in the fifth inning on two walks drawn by Sharlize Palacios and Anna Vines and a single by Rachel Cid. Kelli Godin drove in another with a sharply-hit line drive to left field that allowed pinch runner Lauren Hatch to tag up and score. Grant capped the scoring in the fifth on her grand slam, UCLA's third of the year (Lauryn Carter at Oregon and Woolery versus Alabama).
Wildcats' starting pitcher Devyn Netz earned the loss after allowing four runs off four hits in just a third of an inning.
Also notching base hits for the Bruins were Savannah Pola and Janelle Meoño.
UCLA is back in action Wednesday, April 19 at Long Beach State for a 6 p.m. (PT) contest. The Bruins will host Arizona State for their next Pac-12 series from April 21-23 at Easton Stadium.
