LONG BEACH, Calif. โ Freshman pitcher Taylor Tinsley threw a one-hit, complete-game shutout in the No. 2 UCLA softball team's 10-0 mercy-rule win over Long Beach State at LBSU Softball Complex on Wednesday night.

Tinsley took a no-hit bid late into the fifth inning until Beach pinch hitter Emily Salazar broke up the performance with a two-out single

The Bruins (40-4, 15-3) totaled eight hits, including two apiece by their eighth and ninth hitters Kennedy Powell and Kelli Godin. Sharlize Palacios scored the first run of the game on a solo home run to opposite field in the second inning. Palacios has now homered in three straight games.

Tinsley struck out two batters and allowed only two batters to reach base via error and base-on-balls until the fifth inning. In addition to retiring the side in the second, Tinsley needed just six pitches in a three-up, three-down fourth.

Powell and Godin led off third inning with a pair of bunt singles. Godin's bunt followed her 10 feet up the first baseline until it rolled to a complete stop. Megan Grant walked to load the bases for Maya Brady who plated another Bruins' run on a sacrifice lineout to center field. Brady leads the Bruins with 49 runs batted in this season.

Freshman first baseman Jordan Woolery stepped to the plate after Brady, and after fouling off two pitches, smacked a line drive up the middle that clipped the hand of Long Beach State pitcher Sophia Fernandez which allowed another UCLA run to score. Rachel Cid brought home the Bruins' third run of the inning and fourth of the game on another sacrifice fly to left field.

Cid has now hit safely in three straight games and is 7-for-11 over her last seven contests.

The Bruins scored two more in the fourth inning with some baserunning trickery. Lauryn Carter singled through the left side of the infield, and with help from pinch runner Lauren Hatch, was able to move up another 60 feet to put two in scoring position with no outs. A groundout by Powell to first base allowed Hatch to sprint home.

On Godin's second bunt single of the night, Carter at third base gave the Long Beach State catcher hesitation, allowing Godin enough time to beat the throw to first base and Carter to scamper home after the throw.

Powell's productive night continued in the top half of the fifth with a two-RBI single to right field, putting the mercy rule into effect. UCLA scored its final run of the game on a line drive that popped out of the mitt of the Beach's third baseman.

Powell also made a diving play in left field in the first inning to save a hit.
The Bruins return home to Easton Stadium this week to host Arizona State in a three-game series, beginning Friday at 5 p.m. (PT). The contest will be televised on the Pac-12 Network with Anne Marie Anderson and UCLA Athletic Hall of Famer Natasha Watley on the call.
