April 02, 2023 | Softball
LOS ANGELES – Megan Grant's leadoff home run set the tone for the No. 3 UCLA softball team in its 3-0 win over No. 6 Stanford on Sunday afternoon at Easton Stadium.
The Bruins improved to 32-4 overall and 9-3 in Pac-12 play with the weekend sweep over the Cardinal (28-6, 5-4).
Grant's towering shot over the right field fence in the first inning off the second pitch of the game was her seventh longball of the season. She then led off the bottom of the third with a triple and came around to score on a Jordan Woolery single to left, extending UCLA's lead to 2-0. The San Bruno, Calif. native went a combined 4-for-8 in the series with a 1.250 slugging percentage.
UCLA tacked on an insurance run in the sixth via an opposite field homer from Aaliyah Jordan, her second dinger in as many games. The graduate student made her season debut on March 24 at Oregon and has since gone 7-for-14 from the plate with the two home runs and four RBI.
Freshman starter Taylor Tinsley pitched 4.0 innings of shutout ball to pick up the fifth win of her debut campaign. Tinsley totaled three strikeouts and allowed just three hits in her outing. Lauren Shaw was strong with 2.0 innings of relief before Brooke Yanez slammed the door in the bottom of the seventh with her first save of the season.
The Bruins' pitching staff allowed just one run and 11 hits across 21 innings in the series against the Cardinal.
Entering the series against UCLA, Stanford starter Alana Vawter had given up three or more earned runs in just two of her 15 appearances. The Bruins tagged Vawter for a pair of such outings this weekend, knocking in four runs on Friday evening and three on Sunday afternoon.
Also recording hits for the Bruins were Savannah Pola and Janelle Meoño.
UCLA heads to San Diego for a matchup against UC San Diego on Tuesday, April 4 before a three-game set back home against Oregon State (April 6-8). The Bruins' series versus the Beavers will be televised on the Pac-12 Network.
