Grant Cooks Sun Devils in 7-3 Win
April 21, 2023 | Softball
LOS ANGELES – Freshman Megan Grant went 4-for-4 with a homer and three-RBI double to power the No. 2 UCLA softball team to a 7-3 victory over Arizona State at Easton Stadium Friday night.
Grant's performance marked the second time she's recorded at least four runs batted in over UCLA's last three games. With her second four-hit contest of the season, Grant has now reached base in 18 consecutive games.
The Bruins (41-4, 16-3) totaled nine hits in their 14th straight win. Reigning Pac-12 Player of the Week Maya Brady was the only other Bruin to record multiple knocks. Brady's first single of the game in the first inning scratched UCLA's first run across the board, answering the Sun Devils (21-17, 5-11) who homered in the top half.
Grant and Brady rank second and third in the Pac-12 in RBI with 51 and 50, respectively. Grant also ranks second among all freshmen in the nation in that statistical category. In Pac-12 games, Grant leads the Bruins with a .446 batting average, 23 RBI, eight home runs and a .982 slugging percentage.
UCLA tallied another run in the first on a groundout by Aaliyah Jordan that landed far enough behind the second base bag to score Brady from second base.
Megan Faraimo struck out eight batters and allowed three earned runs over 5.1 innings to pick up her NCAA-leading 23rd win of the year. All three runs were the result of Arizona State home runs.
Jordan Woolery recorded her Pac-12-leading 12th double of the season in the third inning to kickstart another UCLA rally. Woolery's shot was laced into the right-center gap. Lauren Hatch, who entered to pinch run for Woolery, later tagged up on a sacrifice fly ball by Savannah Pola to stretch the Bruins' lead to 3-1.
Grant's solo blast in the fourth cleared the Easton Stadium batting cages in right-center field. One inning later, a hit-by-pitch and back-to-back walks loaded the bases for Grant. The reigning Pac-12 Freshman of the Week pounded another ball into the left-center gap to clear the bases.
Grant and Woolery's 92 combined runs batted in are now the most by a freshman duo in single-season UCLA history, surpassing the previous mark of 90 RBI set by Stacey Nuveman and Courtney Dale in 1997.
Left-handed pitcher Lauren Shaw entered in relief two outs into the sixth inning after Faraimo surrendered her third longball of the game to first baseman Jordyn VanHook. The Sun Devils threatened in the seventh inning with two runners on and two outs, but Lauryn Carter was able to flag down a long flyball at the left field warning track to end the game.
The Bruins look to secure their seventh Pac-12 series win of the season in game two against the Sun Devils at Easton Stadium tomorrow night at 8 p.m. (PT). The game will be televised nationally on ESPN2 with Beth Mowins and Michele Smith on the call.
