No. 2 Bruins Score Five with Two Outs to Defeat CSUN 7-2

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. โ Kennedy Powell went 3-for-3 and scored twice in the No. 2 UCLA softball team's 7-2 victory over CSUN at Matador Diamond Tuesday afternoon.

The Bruins (44-4, 18-3) used a four-run fifth inning to pull away from the Matadors (19-22, 10-8). UCLA put together four straight two-out base hits in the inning to score each run. Powell's knock to right field โ her third of the day โ tallied the final run to push the Bruins out to a 6-2 lead.

The freshman outfielder put UCLA on the board on a Little League inside-the-park home run in the second inning. Powell laced a single to center field and stood between first and second base to bate a throw from the CSUN shortstop. The throw went wide and sailed into the right field foul area, and Powell and Carter went on a mad dash around the bases, both touching home.

Freshman Ramsey Suarez entered the game to pinch hit in the seventh inning and scored UCLA's final run of the game on a solo bomb to straight-away center field on a 55 mile-per-hour changeup. It was her second homer of the year.

In the circle, Brooke Yanez earned the win after spotting 3.1 innings of hitless relief with five strikeouts. Taylor Tinsley earned the start in the game and allowed six hits over 3.2 innings. The Matadors tagged Tinsley in the bottom of the fourth for three straight hits to score their first run of the game and knock the freshman out of the ballgame.

Jordan Woolery's kickstarted the Bruins' fifth inning hit parade with a single to left field. Third baseman Rachel Cid put runners on the corners with a single down the right field line. Alyssa Garcia cleared the bases on a third-straight UCLA hit with a double that went over the CSUN center fielder's head.

UCLA will play its final Pac-12 series of the season with three games at No. 23 Utah, beginning Friday, April 28 at 5 p.m. (PT). All three games will be televised by the Pac-12 Network. The Bruins can clinch the Pac-12 regular-season title outright with one win in the series.
