UCLA Gymnastics Signs Dyson, Stoner, Young

Nov. 26, 1997

Defending NCAA Women's Gymnastics Champions UCLA added two U.S. National Team members to its 1999 squad with the signing of Kaitie Dyson (Houston, TX) and Amy Young (Diamond Bar, CA) to national letters of intent. UCLA also signed elite gymnast Alison Stoner (Laguna Hills, CA) to a letter of intent.

Dyson, who trains at Cypress Academy in Houston, TX under coaches Debbie Kaitschuck, Deana Parish and Luis Garcia is a two-time National Team member who placed 11th all-around and third on beam at the 1997 USA Championships. In junior competition, Dyson placed eighth in the all-around at both the 1995 and 1996 USA Championships. She recently competed internationally at the Grand Prix in Rome, Italy, placing in the Top 10 on vault, bars and the all-around. Dyson is a 4.0 student at Conroe High School.

Young, who trains at Gym-Max under coaches Jia Wen and Howie Liang, earned a spot on the 1997 U.S. National Team by placing 13th in her first-ever USA Championships. Young also had Top 20 placings in all four events. The Diamond Bar HS senior first burst onto the national scene at the 1996 U.S. Classic, where she won the uneven bars title and tied for third on vault and in the all- around in the junior division. Young followed that performance with a runner-up finish on vault at the 1997 U.S. Classic.

Rounding out UCLA's 1997-98 recruiting class is Laguna Hills High's Alison Stoner, who trains at the National Training Center under coaches Zin Kinolik and Debra Hutchinson. A relative newcomer to gymnastics (she began gymnastics just six years ago), Stoner qualified to the 1996 USA Championships just five years after beginning the sport. This year, Stoner had Top 10 placements on vault and bars at the American Classic and placed 15th all-around at the U.S. Classic.
