Colombian and UCLA alum Mariajo Uribe punched her ticket to next month's Rio Olympics, as the International Golf Federation announced its final rankings and the field for the first Olympic women's golf tournament in 112 years.
The tournament will be played at Brazil's Reserva de Marapendi Golf Course from Aug. 17-20. The format will be a 72-hole, individual stroke-play tournament with 60 players. In the event of a tie for any of the first three positions, a three-hole playoff will determine the medal winners.
The two-year qualification for the Olympics began on July 14, 2014. The last time a golf competition was held in the Olympics was at the 1904 Games in St. Louis, Mo. The International Olympic Committee chose to re-introduce the sport for the 2016 and 2020 (Tokyo) Games.
Uribe is the 33rd-ranked golfer in the IGF rankings and is no stranger to winning gold medals. At the inaugural golf event at the 2015 Pan American Games, Uribe won the women's and mixed events in Toronto. She shot a four-round total of 9-under (279) in the individual tournament to win by two strokes, while also winning the four-player, mixed event with her fellow Colombians. Since turning pro in 2010, Uribe has earned over $1.4 million, posting 12 top 10s on the LPGA Tour. In two seasons at UCLA (2007-2009), Uribe was a two-time First Team All-American and Second Team All-Pac-10 selection. She notched three victories in only 21 starts, including 11 top 10s.
